Reading Room

Ames, Iowa

Offering a figural counterpoint to this 1960 era home, a modest library is sited in a garden of herbs and flowering plants. Built for a retired academic couple, it maximizes passive cooling combining fresh air via operable windows, deep overhangs and shading for warm summer months. The interior is lined with bookcases and space for framed art while the exterior sheathed in a rain screen of red cedar siding.
