Campbell Transit Station
Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa
Located in a 30-acre parking lot, the Campbell Transit Station is designed to serve the commuting needs of faculty and students. While programmatic requirements included: seating, wireless communication, restroom, and vending facilities, the station was designed to resist the effects of recurrent flooding through the use of cast-in-place concrete construction.
The undulating roof also participates in the ecology of the site by collecting and directing rainwater to a native grass rain garden. The result is a shelter that marks its place in the horizontal landscape by a parallel and undulating overhead plane–by the shadows it casts, wind it buffers and the precipitation it sheds.
