De-Code/Re-Code Atlanta

Atlanta, Georgia

Awarded first prize for the Streetscape site in the competition entitled, “Public Space in the
New American City/Atlanta 1996,” the project focused attention on the role of language and its instruments (zoning ordinances, building codes, and planning guidelines) in the definition, development, and maintenance of “the public realm”. Dislodging singular notions of “the public” and “public space,” the competition entry offered a rewritten ordinance situating the space of “the public” at the intersection of public policy, urban architecture, and public access. Expanding the discussion of “public space” to include both space and event, the project offers new possibilities for the design of urban civic space.
